FIGHTER INFO
Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, 33 year-old Fabricio Werdum began training Jiu-Jitsu in 1998 after his girlfriend’s former boyfriend challenged him to a fight. Werdum was unfamiliar with BJJ and was easily choked out. But convinces of the art’s effectiveness, he sought out Winner Behring and Marcio Corleta to begin training in Jiu-Jitsu. Known as “Vai Cavalo” (Meaning “Go Horse” as a reference to “Being Crazy, Wild”), he was given the nickname because he would use the phrase in conversation.

Werdum fought his first pro bout in England at Millennium Brawl 7 and submitted Tengis Tedoradze. At Pride 29, Werdum battled Pride FC verteran, Tom “Big Cat” Erikson and finished the wrestler with a rear naked choke in round 1 of the contest. He then followed up with a submission over Red Devil powerhouse, Roman Zentsov. In 2006, Werdum defeated Golden Glory fighter, John Olav Einemo and then followed with another victory over current Strikeforce Champion, Alistair Overeem which lead to the biggest test of his career to that point, a matchup against Rodrigo Minotauro” Nogueira in which he was defeated in a unanimous decision. Other notable matchups of his career include wins over Brandon Vera, Gabriel Gonzaga, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, Alexsander Emelianenko, and Fedor Emelianenko.

Werdum faced WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko on June 26, 2010 at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum. In an enormous upset victory, Werdum forced Fedor to tap via triangle 1:09 into the first round.
