A member of the highly-regarded American Kickboxing Academy, Thomson a veteran of UFC and Pride, and the former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion. With an impressive record of 16 wins and 3 loses, Thomson holds victories over Rob McCullough, Hermes Franca, Nam Phan, Duane Ludwig, and Current Strikeforce Lightweight Champion, Gilbert Melendez. After a 6-fight win streak, Thomson captured the lightweight championship by earning a five round, unanimous decision over Gilbert Melendez in the main event at HP Pavilion on June 27, 2008. He followed the bout with a 1 minute and 14 seconds demolition of Ashe “The Archer” Bowman during STRIKEFORCE’s second event at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, CA.

After two setbacks due to injury, "The Punk" finally faced interim chapino Gilbert Melendez once agin to unify the Lightweight Championship at Strikeforce: Evolution, where he lost a 5-round decision to Melendez in a bout that many consider the fight of the year. Thomson bounced back to defeat veteran contender Pat Healy via third round submission in San Jose June 26th 2010.
