An All-American wrestler in college, Shields trained with the Cesar Gracie Fight Team, Fairtex Combat Academy, and SLO Kickboxing Academy, and has won many grappling competitions. He also developed a hybrid style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling, called "American Jiu Jitsu". Shields' has many victories over skilled opponents, such as Hayato Sakurai, Yushin Okami, Robbie Lawler, and Jason "Mayhem" Miller. Being the first and only Welterweight Champion of EliteXC, Shields recently captured the vacant Strikeforce Middleweight Championship in a unanimous decision in his rematch against Jason Miller.
